Tickets are now available for a whimsical evening of high-flying performances, art installations, a silent auction, and a sky-themed costume contest. Proceeds from ticket sales go to support Angels Gate Cultural Center’s mission to provide space for artists to work and to engage the community through arts education, exhibitions of contemporary art, and cultural events. AGCC is located at 3601 S. Gaffey St. San Pedro, CA 90731.

The sky-themed costume contest encourages everyone to embrace the theme (costumes admired, not required). Come as a cloud, a star, a bird, a plane—anything that might be seen in the sky. The most creative sky-inspired costumes will win prizes. The silent art auction will give partygoers opportunity to bid on contemporary artwork by AGCC Studio Artists including Phoebe Barnum, Dennis Keeley, June Edmonds, Ann Weber, and more. The evening and environment will include site-specific art installations by AGCC Studio Artists Henry Krusoe and Soft Chick.

The arts are vital to building and sustaining healthy communities. Beyond creative expression, the arts enrich everyone’s lives through connection. Funds raised during Awake in the Clouds will help AGCC provide over 20,000 community members with arts and arts education programming.

Tickets are available now at angelsgateart.org/awake

Four levels of sponsorship are available for community members who wish to provide even more essential support for Angels Gate Cultural Center’s exhibitions, arts education, and community programming. Friends of the arts who can’t attend the party but still want to make an impact may select the Angel Sponsor option in the ticket menu to support the arts at AGCC.

The event also marks the closing of the AGCC gallery’s current exhibition, Cloud 3601. Cloud 3601 presents works by thirty-five artists who create at the Center. Recognizing AGCC’s long history of artists who established art studios in the former army barracks during the 1970s, Cloud 3601 celebrates the artist community as vital to the creative vibrancy of San Pedro. Featuring ceramics, photography, woodworking, painting, metalwork, poetry, sculpture, and digital media, Cloud 3601 presents a selection of diverse works showcasing the multifaceted art practices of the AGCC Studio Artist Program.

Eight teenagers in jeans and hoodies stand facing a wall with a projection of vibrant, local wildflowers, working together and reaching and tracing the lines to create a large scale mural.

San Pedro, CA – Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC), in partnership with Mer Young and local youth, is
pleased to announce the public unveiling of a new mural, Native Blooms on Saturday, May 3rd, from 12-1
pm at Angels Gate Cultural Center. The completion of this large-scale artwork marks the conclusion of the
Spring 2025 AGCC Teen Mural Club (TMC), a ten-week professional development workshop for San Pedro
students ages 13-20 years old.

Native Blooms is the culmination of the Center’s third Teen Mural Club cohort, which included ten weeks
of professional training, planning, and painting by San Pedro based students under the mentorship of
Indigenous multidisciplinary artist, Mer Young (Chichimeca & Apache). The participants represented
students from San Pedro High School’s Olguin and Flagship Campuses, Port of Los Angeles High School,
Harbor College, and homeschooling.

The final piece is an impactful vision of California Native plants thriving at Angels Gate Cultural Center, in
San Pedro, and across our greater ecosystem. Under the mentorship of Mer Young, TMC students carefully
observed and researched the native plants in their environment and selected one to adapt into the mural.
The result, Native Blooms, is a colorful collage focusing on native species our young artists selected to
bloom on our campus in perpetuity.

Angels Gate Cultural Center invites the public to celebrate the power of education, community, and our
native ecosystem as they present the completed mural, for the first time, to the public. Please join AGCC
for the unveiling of Native Blooms created by the Teen Mural Club, under the guidance of Artist Mer
Young, on Saturday, May 3rd, 12-1 pm. The unveiling will take place on the Lawn, in between Buildings A
and B, at Angels Gate Cultural Center, located at 3601 S. Gaffey St. San Pedro, CA 90731.

Native Blooms will remain on display for the public during park hours daily, in perpetuity, at Angels Gate
Cultural Center on Building B, overlooking the Lawn.

This event and the Teen Mural Club are made possible by the generous support of the NLT Foundation and
is hosted by Angels Gate Cultural Center.

The 18th Many Winters Gathering of Elders – October 10, 11, 12  and 13 at Angels Gate Cultural Center https://angelsgateart.org/the-18th-many-winters-gathering-of-elders-october-10-11-12-and-13-at-angels-gate-cultural-center/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 19:55:21 +0000 https://angelsgateart.org/?post_type=give_payment&p=18401 San Pedro, CA., September 16, 2024 – The Many Winters Gathering of Elders (MWGOE) Organizing Committee is excited to announce its 18th MWGOE, scheduled for Thursday, October 10th through Sunday, October 13th, from 11 am to 6 pm at Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) in San Pedro, CA on Gabrielino Tongva territory. The MWGOE is a four-day gathering where Native/Indigenous Elders and knowledge-keepers from across the country gather to share teachings through oral tradition with the community. The Gathering also hosts Native ceremonies throughout the four days. MWGOE is held in partnership with AGCC, open to the public, free to attend and family friendly.

The MWGOE plays a vital role in the Native community of greater Los Angeles, with the participation and support of the original peoples of the land. The vision of the Gathering is to host a sacred space for people to come together, with the intention to listen, learn from and support Indigenous communities, and to inspire a healthier future for all people.

Elders from local tribes including Gabrielino Shoshone, Gabrielino Tongva, Acjachemen, Fernandeño Tataviam, Chumash, and other California tribes have attended in the past and will join this October. Tribal elders from other regions (Arizona, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota and others) are expected, as well. The Gathering takes place under an arbor which serves as the traditional place of teaching and learning – where Elders pass on knowledge to the younger generation, and is part of intergenerational healing from historical trauma.

The 2024 MWGOE Logo Art was created by Meyo Marrufo (Eastern Pomo from the Clear Lake Basin, and citizen of Robinson Rancheria).

History of MWGOE

The first MWGOE was held on October 12, 1992, in response to the false narrative represented by the quincentennial celebrations of Christopher Columbus’ “discovery of America.” Today, the Gathering continues to be an important occasion for the Native/Indigenous community, to reconnect to and practice ceremony, and to celebrate over 530 years of spiritual survival. It also allows access for the general public to learn and acknowledge the traditional knowledge and values that have supported and sustained Native lifeways.

During the Many Winters Gathering of Elders, no alcohol, drugs, cameras, pictures, video or other recording equipment are allowed; the MWGOE Organizing Committee requests that attendees respect and observe ceremonial protocol, available on the MWGOE Linktree. No dogs/pets allowed near or around the arbor or sweatlodge areas. Angels Gate Cultural Center is located at 3601 South Gaffey Street, San Pedro, CA, 90731.

For more information regarding the 18th MWGOE, please visit the MWGOE site, MWGOE Linktree, or call (562) 265-8820.

This event is presented through generous support from The California Endowment, Future Coalition through the Youth Direct Access Fund, Department of Cultural Affairs City of Los Angeles, the Perenchio Foundation, the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, and the Pala Band of Mission Indians. We would also like to thank the Central, Coastal and Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Councils and individual community members for their support.
