It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of photographer Slobodan Dimitrov. Slobodan was a Studio Artist with Angels Gate Cultural Center for 30+ years, during which he photographed many fellow Studio Artists for his Artist Portraits series.

Throughout his life, Slobodan dedicated himself to extensive projects that expertly utilized photography to document the labor force, including a 20-year project documenting the Piledrivers Union Local 2375 and Local 34. The Longshore, a mural which depicts the various longshore occupations in the Port of Los Angeles, can be seen at 255 West 7th Street in San Pedro, CA.

Prolific and engaged, Slobodan had an immense impact on the Angels Gate community and he will be missed.

In Part Two! a shadow out of the noise, a hyper-visceral experience is created by Beck+Col’s avant-garde use of opera, heavy metal, and fantastical wearable sculptures in their otherworldly performances.Creating overwhelming sensations that employ both the visual and auditory in decidedly non-traditional contexts, Beck+Col unleash the inner-self to arrive at raw and unrestrained human experience.

The exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th, 2023.

Solace / Sublime

Solace / Sublime is a group exhibition featuring the work of artists who look to phenomena of the natural world as a primary source of inspiration. The exhibition, curated by Molly Enholm Velazco, brings together the work of Contemporary Southern Californian artists Samantha Fields, Megan Frances, Yvette Gellis, Virginia Katz, R. Nelson Parrish and Molly Enholm Velazco, seeks to explore a contrasting notion through the very elements often associated with the sublime experience. Through exploring these forces of nature, these artists embrace the dichotomies of the natural world: the minute and overwhelming, the eternal and the ephemeral, the solace and the sublime.

The exhibition will be on view from July 8th – September 9th, 2023.

The gallery is open to the public Thursday – Saturday from 10am to 4pm. To learn more, please visit angelsgateart.org.

Her personal arts practice includes multimedia collages consisting of paintings, drawings, writing, and other objects entwined with the canvas. She also makes clothes which she models and styles for promotions and events. This spring she joined the AGCC Mural workshop where she helped design and paint one of the murals on campus, entitled Tongva: Still Here.

LA County Department of Arts and Culture Sara Abrahamsson is a visual artist and Art History major at UCLA. Her artistic passions and interest in the administration of arts organizations led her to this exciting role at AGCC.

As a culmination of her research in Cuban post-revolutionary graphic art, Sara will complete an Honors thesis in her final year at UCLA. In her art practice, she explores themes of queerness in large-scale acrylic paintings, often tying historical events to her own experiences.

Our Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern this year is Freddie Camacho. Freddie is  a Filipino-American artist focusing on personal experiences and relationships that have shaped and impacted his gay identity.  Portraiture painting is an essential aspect of his work.

Freddie just completed a BFA in Drawing and Painting this year at California State University, Long Beach.

Save the date! We are proud to announce that Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) has once again been selected to participate in Long Beach Gives (LBG) on September 21st. Long Beach Gives is a 24-hour online giving day that helps our organization raise funds and continue to provide arts education to students in need. With your help, we can expand the reach of our programming and continue to engage our community through arts education, exhibitions of contemporary art, and cultural events.

We hope you will save the date of September 21st, and encourage your friends and family to do the same! Learn more about AGCC’s participation in Long Beach Gives on our LBG page here.

Collage is an arts venue in San Pedro that opened in July 2021. Located in downtown San Pedro at 731 South Pacific Avenue, Collage is a place for Jazz, songwriters, art and sea shanties, plus more.

For more information visit their website and their calendar for upcoming events.

Saturday, June 17th is the final day to view our current exhibitions, MINGLE MANGLE and Notions of Place. The closing reception will take place in the gallery from 2-4pm. At 2:30 pm there will be an Artist Talk with the artists of Notions of Place.

The Artist Talk will feature Notions of Place curator and artist Lauren Kasmer, as well as artists Hilary Baker, Joyce Dallal, and Flora Kao. The artists will discuss their work in relation to the exhibition’s themes of place and home, and there will be a chance for audience members to ask questions of their own.

Guest curated by Lauren Kasmer, Notions of Place examines the complexity of inhabited spaces, as they create metaphors of exchange between nature and human action. Notions of Place includes works by Hilary Baker, Joyce Dallal, Natalie M. Godinez, Kio Griffith, Flora Kao, Lauren Kasmer, LaRissa Rogers, Jenny Yurshansky, and HK Zamani.

Click here to RSVP on eventbrite (not required).

The exhibition includes works by Phoebe Barnum, Beth Elliott, Bill Faecke, Bill Jaros, Nguyen Ly, Edmond Maloney, Tim Maxeiner, Lowell Nickel, Ashton Phillips, Susan Rawcliffe, and Ann Weber. Responding to the concept of sound intake, these artists work in a variety of media including various printmaking techniques, sculpture, video, assemblage, handmade instruments, built ecosystems, and sound media.

More information on our website.

This exhibition is presented through support from the California Natural Resources Agency through the Museum Grant Program under the California Cultural and Historical Endowment.

Drawing on dreams, memories, and the spaces in between, the works in Notions of Place disintegrate commonly held social views that have acted as fences around our homes. Each of the artists in the exhibition articulate different facets of what we call place. Curated by Lauren Kasmer, Notions of Place includes works by Hilary Baker, Natalie M. Godinez, Kio Griffith, Flora Kao, Lauren Kasmer, LaRissa Rogers, Jenny Yurshansky, and HK Zamani.

The Notions of Place installation is an invitation to inhabit a space within the gallery.  Lauren Kasmer activates her installation by inviting gallery visitors to adorn themselves in her upcycled photographic and vintage remnant wearables, and partake in foods that reflect her birthplace and heritage, on Saturday June 3rd, 7-8pm, during the soundpedro2023 MINGLE On-Site event.

The galleries also feature Homesĭtē, an ongoing participatory work by Joyce Dallal and Lauren Kasmer. Consisting of a series of structures emblematic of Los Angeles landscape and architecture, the installation reflects on the city as both home and origin.

Angels Gate artist Scott Anger’s latest documentary film series, America and the Taliban, will broadcast on PBS FRONTLINE on April 4th, 11th, and 25th.  Drawing on decades of on-the-ground reporting and interviews with Taliban and U.S. officials, this epic three-part investigation traces the missteps and consequences spanning America’s longest war.  Scott served as the co-producer and director of photography on the film.

Scott has been reporting on Afghanistan since the Taliban first held power in the late 1990s.  Working as a radio journalist at the time, he opened one of only five foreign news bureaus allowed to operate under the strict regime in Kabul.

Since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, Scott has shot and helped produce three other films for FRONTLINE about the war: Obama’s War, Return of the Taliban, and In Search of Al Qaeda.

Join us for the opening reception of Notions of Place on Saturday April 15th, 3-5pm, coinciding with AGCC’s Spring Open Studios Day.

The galleries will also feature Homesĭtē, an ongoing participatory work by Joyce Dallal and Lauren Kasmer. Consisting of a series of structures emblematic of Los Angeles landscape and architecture, the installation reflects on the city as both home and origin.

Funding is provided by the California Natural Resources Agency for the Museum Grant Program under the California Cultural and Historical Endowment

Our Studio Artist Program welcomes three new MFA students from the Syracuse University Turner Residency program.
Markus Denil is from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in rural Nova Scotia, Canada where he grew up with few rules or limitations as the restless middle child of two Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University educated artists.  Denil received a BFA in studio art with a minor in interdisciplinary studies in sexuality from Concordia University in Montreal, where he graduated with distinction. He is currently spending the second spring semester of his MFA at Syracuse University working in Los Angeles as part of the LA Turner Residency program.
Jaleel Blanchard creates paintings of figures using the visual vocabulary of comics. His art explores and challenges the conceived notion of how portraiture is normally created. Combining his understanding of historical portraiture with the gesture lines of a graphic novel, he seeks to question what a black nerd aesthetic would look like. By situating himself in the world of afrosurrealism, he draws the world around him using the narratives he would like to see to describe his experience as an African American.
Joseph Troxler is from the south, raised by southerners, and grew up in places like central Asia, eventually settling in North Central Pennsylvania. At the age of eight, his family embarked on a five year mission to Kazakhstan, where Joseph would spend his time drawing and escaping to far off worlds through building forts, during the summers, and ice slides with his two brothers during the harsh winters. Upon returning to the US he divided his time, continuing drawing, playing video games and sports. Joseph Troxler received his BA from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA  in 2017.

It is with a heavy heart and peaceful mind that I share with you the passing of our beloved friend, artist, colleague, and board member Laurine DiRocco.

Laurine faced her transition as a challenge like any other, with no fear and in charge with a plan.  She was an artist and educator and part of the beginnings of Angels Gate. For the last 40 years she has been a dedicated and joyful presence here. She was a consistent volunteer and a master artist-teacher. She served as Director of Arts Education as well as many seasons on Angels Gate’s Board of Directors.

Laurine was an early childhood arts educator and mentor to so many, including me. She often said teaching was her art practice. She was committed to student-centered creative freedom of expression that comes from nurturing the personal observations of this curious world. She influenced the field of early childhood education and her expertise helped shape the mission and goals of our own artist in classrooms program.

-Amy Eriksen, Executive Director
